10-year Anniversary of the 9runrun First Responders Charity Race

The 9runrun event has helped raise awareness and funds for mental health initiatives in our community for a many years. Now in its 10th year, the funds raised by 9runrun participants and their donors, will support the Ottawa First Responders Foundation. Mental health issues among police, firefighters and paramedics are an issue that must be addressed and talked about. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a frightening and increasingly common occurrence for first responders on the job. In fact, first responders are at least twice as likely to suffer PTSD compared to the general population. It can be devastating for those suffering from mental health issues when they do not have proper support. Adding to the issues is the stigma that still exists surrounding mental illness. We encourage you to participate in the event or consider donating to this very worthwhile cause.

This Year’s Events

Join the men and women of Ottawa’s Fire, Police and Paramedic service in the event that best suits your physical ability. All proceeds will be going towards the Ottawa First Responders Foundation. There will be three events taking place on Saturday, October 19, 2019, including:

Half-Marathon: Run a half marathon that includes parts of the Trans Canada Trail which promises to show off the last of Ontario’s brilliant fall colours. Start time: 9:15 am (walkers start at 8:00 am)
10K Run: This 10K run starts and ends in the heart of Stittsville, with some stunning parts of the Trans Canada Trail. Start Time: 9:00 am
2K Run: Perfect for families, you can run, walk, or stroll with kids and adults of all ages. Strollers are allowed! Start Time: 10:00 am

And don’t forget, the 9runrun event wouldn’t be possible without the support of volunteers and participants! Honourary Members Presentation for Oegema, Nicholson & Associates President at 2017 IBAO Convention

The Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario’s convention came to the Shaw Centre in Ottawa October 25^th and 26^th for two days full of inspirational content, networking and entertainment. The event is the most anticipated insurance event of the year and did not disappoint for 2017. With spotlight speakers including John Herdman, Head Coach of the Canadian Women’s National Soccer Team, the incoming IBAO President, Brian Purcell, the Head of Marketing from Google Canada, Fab Dolan, and many more, the convention provided an opportunity for those in the insurance industry to take in valuable information and spend time with their colleagues and peers.

Perhaps the most anticipated part of the convention is the annual Awards of Excellence Gala which presents awards for Affiliate of the Year, Young Broker of the Year, Innovator of the Year, and Brokerage of the Year. Along with the awards, the IBAO also makes Honourary Members Presentations. Our President, Bart Oegema, was in the spotlight at the Awards of Excellence as an Honourary Member for 2017. We’d like to extend our congratulations to Bart for this recognition of his work in the insurance industry. We’d also like to extend our congratulations to Tyler Lussier from our Manotick location who was a finalist for Affiliate of the Year as part of the Ottawa Insurance Brokers Association. Oegema, Nicholson & Associates believes we have the greatest team in the insurance industry, and we are proud that members of our group are recognized for their hard work and continual efforts to better themselves and our company to better serve our clients. A number of fraudulent letters and cheques have been sent out bearing the Intact Insurance name and logo, misrepresenting them as part of a mystery shopper assignment.

These letters are a scam, and encourage their receivers to deposit a cheque and transfer a portion of the sum to another account. Intact Insurance does not send out letters or cheques for such programs. If you have questions regarding the authenticity of any correspondence or cheques sent by Intact Insurance, please contact your ONA broker or email info@intact.net. If you have received such a letter and cheque, please report it to your local police agency and send a copy of your police report to Intact Insurance at info@intact.net. A Farewell to John Oegema, Founder & Family Member

December 1, 1930 (Netherlands) to December 4, 2013 (Ottawa)

After 83 years of a well full-filled life, peacefully, surrounded by family, John passed away. Beloved and faithful husband of the late Gonny Oegema and loving and supportive father of Ellen (John), Bart (Lori), Peter, and pre-deceased by sons John (Anneke), and Rick (Gamble). Dedicated Grandfather of Greg (Aileen), Janice (Justin), Jennifer, Lesley-Anne (Tyler), Bart (Kristin), Nick, Tim, Alida, Brittany (Nathan), Kristopher and Cory. Great Grandfather to Dirk, Annika, Bianca, Lucy, and Martinus. Brother-in-law to John and Will DeVries and family in Canada, the US, and the Netherlands. John proudly founded Oegema, Nicholson & Associates in 1961, now seeing its third generation of family management and was humbly one of the founding members of both the Ottawa Christian School and the Barrhaven Fellowship Community Church. Visitation at Calvin Christian Reformed Church, 1475 Merivale Road, Ottawa on Friday December 6th from 3pm to 7pm. Private Interment at Capital Memorial Gardens, 3700 Prince of Wales Drive, Ottawa. Memorial Service being held Saturday December 7th at 11 am., at Calvin Christian Reformed Church. Pastor Rick Nanninga officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in John’s memory to the Queensway Carleton Hospital or the Bible League of Canada. The family would like to thank Dr. Kalin and the staff at the Queensway Carleton Hospital for all their help and support. He will be fondly remembered in our hearts forever. Foster Parent Society of Ontario (FPSO) Annual Conference

Oegema, Nicholson & Associates was a recent and proud invitee at the Foster Parent Society of Ontario (FPSO) 2013 Annual Conference as their Automobile and Home Insurance Group Program Provider. The Conference was held in Richmond Hill, Ontario from June 9-16^th, 2013. The FPSO prides itself on its efforts to become the dedicated voice of foster families across Ontario. Today they represent over 40 local foster parent associations – that’s over 8000 foster families across Ontario. The FPSO is also a strong promoter for the need of increased training to foster families, and is working on developing such diverse issues as:
