Unfortunately, there are people out there who will put your health and financial wellbeing on the line\u2026 for the benefit of their own pocketbooks. Sometimes, collisions are staged between two willing participants that are part of the same fraudulent ring. In other cases, they entrap unknowing participants. But according to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/staged-collisions-a-catalyst-for-larger-insurance-fraud-1.2709010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0this CBC article<\/a>, the cost is immense:<\/p><blockquote><p><i>A 2012 report by KPMG estimated that auto insurance fraud in Ontario costs insurers up to $1.6 billion a year, and accounts as much as 18 per cent of total claims.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote><p>While there\u2019s been increased media attention on staged accidents, the issue is still a bit under-the-radar amongst the general public. In December, for example,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/canadianunderwriter.ca\/2014\/12\/16\/arrests-made-1-million-in-stolen-vehicles-recovered-in-ontario-auto-fraud-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">police in Ontario arrested seven individuals<\/a>\u00a0and recovered more than $1 million in stolen vehicles as part of an auto fraud investigation. But that\u2019s just one of\u00a0<em>many<\/em>\u00a0major fraud rings discovered last year in Canada. So, what can you do to protect yourself from the effects of auto insurance fraud?<\/p><h2>Know the Common Types of Staged Collisions:<\/h2><p>Here are some of the most common types of staged collisions that scammers will use to entrap their victims. These are summarized from the Insurance Bureau of Canada\u2019s\u00a0<i>Get in the Know<\/i>\u00a0site;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/getintheknow.ibc.ca\/Blog\/2013\/March-2013\/Staged-Collisions-types-and-tips.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">visit their page for more information<\/a>, and animated diagrams of the scams.<\/p><ul><li><strong>Swoop and squat<\/strong>:\u00a0The perpetrator pulls out in front of the victim\u2019s car, and then immediately stops, causing a rear-end collision.<\/li><li><strong>Drive down<\/strong>:\u00a0The fraudster waves the victim through, and then accelerates into their vehicle, often claiming that they hadn\u2019t waved the victim through in the first place.<\/li><li><strong>Sideswipe<\/strong>:\u00a0Usually takes place in a dual left-turn intersection, where the fraudster intentionally collides with a car turning left that has taken a wide turn.<\/li><\/ul><h2>Know and Follow Post-Collision Procedures:<\/h2><p>There are a number of standard procedures that you should know to go through after being in an auto collision. Following these steps closely can minimize your risk of the other party in the crash exploiting you in a staged collision scenario. Here is an easy-to-read, thorough\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsco.gov.on.ca\/en\/auto\/brochures\/pages\/brochure_accidents.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guide on what to do after a car accident<\/a>, from the Financial Services Commission of Ontario. On that page, it notes the following:<\/p><blockquote><p><i>If you suspect that you may be a victim or target of a scam or fraud, you can help put an end to the scam or fraud by reporting it.\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0<i>As a first step, report the matter to police. You can also make a report to FSCO\u2019s Fraud Hotline. Go to\u00a0<\/i><a title=\"FSCO&#039;s Fraud Hotlines tips\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fsco.gov.on.ca\/en\/auto\/hotline\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>www.fsco.gov.on.ca\/TipNow<\/i><\/a><i>\u00a0or call 1-855-5TIP-NOW. Tips to FSCO\u2019s Fraud Hotline can be anonymous. You can also submit an anonymous tip to\u00a0<\/i><a title=\"Crime Stoppers\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadiancrimestoppers.org\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Crime Stoppers\u00a0<\/i><\/a><i>(1-800-222-TIPS).\u00a0<\/i><i>If you want legal advice, the\u00a0<\/i><a title=\"Law Society of Upper Canada\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lsuc.on.ca\/with.aspx?id=654\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Law Society of Upper Canada\u00a0<\/i><i><\/i><\/a><i>has services to help you find a legal professional.\u00a0<\/i><i>In addition to the police, there are a number of other\u00a0<\/i><a title=\"organizations that you can contact for help\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fsco.gov.on.ca\/en\/about\/warning-notices\/Pages\/what-to-do-scam-victim.aspx#otherorgs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>organizations<\/i><\/a><i>\u00a0that you can contact for help.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote><h2>Use Your Instincts:<\/h2><ul><li>If you\u2019re being tailgated or cars are acting suspiciously behind you, safely allow them space to pass, or if the suspicious behavior continues, pull off in to a safe, highly visible spot (for example: a gas station.)<\/li><li>If you do end up in a collision, be wary of anyone (the other driver, a tow truck driver, witnesses) suggesting too strongly to use certain service suppliers (tow trucks, body shops, etc. ) In that previously mentioned CBC article, Rick Dubin of the Insurance Bureau of Canada states, \u201cThere are kickbacks in this whole service supplier chain.\u201d<\/li><li>Often, the vehicles used in staged collisions will be loaded with passengers, who will all claim injury \u2013 even if it was a low-speed crash.
